The History of the Right to Love
United Nations Free & Equal, an initiative of the United Nations Human Rights Office, ran a campaign called, "The History of the Right to Love", showing the criminalization of same sex relations from 1799 to 2016. I designed a visualization that showed how different countries have criminalized, decriminalized, and even recriminalized being gay throughout history.
Map Details
There were some details of the map I had to keep in mind: The subnational level data had to be shown for USA and Australia, as these countries had different legislations between each state. Also, the boundaries of some countries and regions are undetermined or disputed; namely, Jammu and Kashmir, Sudan and South Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia.
